National Ubuntu Competition

Grade 12 student, Zahra Bawa, had the privilege of meeting her Excellency Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga in Johannesburg when she was awarded 3rd place at the National Ubuntu Art and Short Movie competition awards ceremony (in conjunction with the HMC (Prize Giving) held in Johannesburg on the 19th of July 2019.
Learners from around South Africa competed in USMAC competition to showcase their artistic and cinematographic skills through the spirit of Ubuntu encompassed by Nelson Mandela and the Top 5 learners of each category were awarded with cash prizes. However, only the Top 3 were invited to the awards ceremony in Johannesburg.
Star College Cape Town were well represented in the USMAC competition as in each category there were learners in the Top 5 and all learners that competed from Star College were ranked relatively higher overall in their respective categories.
However, a huge congratulation to our Top 5 winners:
Zahra Bawa – 3rd in the Art Category
Azraa Diedericks and Nadia Khan – 4th in the Short Film Category (which can be viewed on the USMAC website –
“I dream of an Africa which is in peace with itself”- Nelson Mandela
“Nelson Mandela was a hero who fought for peace and equality, but mostly he fought for an opportunity for us, as global citizens, to change the world for the better.
In my poster, the African continent with Mandela represents his dream for the future. The hands holding the puzzle pieces, symbolises how everyone needs to work together and do his or her part to achieve unity and peace. The different colours of the hands show that all people, regardless of their religion, race, gender, age or background, have the power to impact the world. This influence from different people touches Africa as a whole and makes
a contribution towards building Mandela’s dream. This is shown in the explosive colours of Africa. Our differences make us unique, stronger and more beautiful as a nation. Ubuntu is represented by how the different colours mix together and enhance each other to form our
continent.” – Zahra Bawa
As Nelson Mandela once said: “It is in your hands to create a better world for all who live in it.”
